Folded Corner is a social reading app designed to help you keep track of your reading, create personal and shared book lists, and connect with people you choose.
Your reading life is personal. This Privacy Policy explains what information Folded Corner collects, why we collect it, how it is used and shared, and the choices you have about your information.
1. Information we collect
Account information
When you create or use a Folded Corner account, we may collect information such as:
- your email address;
- your name or chosen name;
- your profile information and profile photo;
- your language preference;
- your account and authentication information; and
- information needed to manage your account and preferences.
Passwords are handled through our authentication provider. Folded Corner does not store your password in browser storage.
Your reading information
When you use Folded Corner, we store information you choose to add, such as:
- books on your Shelf;
- reading status and history;
- ratings, notes and tags;
- personal lists;
- shared lists and books added to them;
- reading sessions and dates;
- comments and replies; and
- other reading-related information you choose to provide.
Your personal reading information, such as personal notes, ratings and reading history, is private unless a feature is specifically designed to share information.
What other Readers can see depends on the feature, your privacy and discoverability settings, and their access to the relevant shared list or feature. Comments and other information you contribute to shared spaces may be visible to the Readers who have access to those spaces.
Friends and shared features
If you use Folded Corner's social and collaborative features, we may process information about:
- friend connections and requests;
- invitations and friend codes;
- shared-list participation and roles;
- comments and replies; and
- activity made visible through your privacy settings and shared features.
Folded Corner is designed around sharing with people you choose rather than maintaining a public social profile.
Photos and uploaded book covers
If you upload a profile photo or a book-cover image, we process and store that image so it can be displayed in Folded Corner.
Uploaded manual book-cover images are stored at publicly accessible image URLs. Anyone who has an image's URL may be able to view the image, even when the reading information associated with that book is private.
Uploading a book cover does not make your personal notes, ratings, reading history or other private reading information public.
Support and contact information
If you contact us, we may collect your reply-to email address, account information, the category of your request, and the information you include in your message.
We use this information to respond to your question, problem, feedback, or privacy request.
Technical information
When you use Folded Corner, Folded Corner and our service providers may process technical information necessary to provide, maintain and protect the service, such as:
- IP address;
- browser and device information;
- requested pages or URLs;
- network and request information;
- security and operational logs; and
- authentication and session information.
Folded Corner does not currently use advertising pixels, session-replay tools or dedicated behavioural analytics services.
2. How we use your information
We use personal information to:
- create and manage your account;
- authenticate you and keep your account secure;
- provide your Shelf, lists, reading history and other app features;
- enable friendships, invitations, shared lists and comments;
- apply your privacy and discoverability settings;
- remember your language and display preferences;
- search for and display book information;
- send necessary account and authentication emails;
- respond to support requests;
- maintain, troubleshoot and protect Folded Corner;
- prevent misuse and protect the security of the service; and
- comply with applicable legal obligations.
We do not currently use your personal information to send marketing emails or serve targeted advertising.
3. Book searches and book information
Folded Corner uses ISBNdb to provide book-search and catalog information.
When you search for a book, your search terms are sent to ISBNdb through Folded Corner's server. Folded Corner does not intentionally send your Reader ID, email address, browser headers or personal IP address to ISBNdb as part of that book-search request.
Book-cover images may also be loaded directly from external image providers. When your browser requests an externally hosted image, that provider may receive technical information such as your IP address and browser request information.
4. Service providers
Folded Corner relies on third-party providers and infrastructure to operate the service. These currently include:
- Supabase for authentication, database services, storage and application functions;
- Vercel for website and application hosting;
- Resend for account emails and contact-form delivery;
- ISBNdb for book-search and catalog information;
- Google Fonts for font delivery;
- Cloudflare and Amazon Web Services (AWS) as infrastructure used in providing parts of the service; and
- Microsoft email protection infrastructure for email sent to Folded Corner's email addresses.
When Folded Corner pages using Google Fonts load, your browser requests font resources from Google. Google may receive information associated with that request, including your IP address and browser request information.
We use these providers for the purposes described above. Their handling of information is governed by applicable agreements, their privacy terms and applicable law.
5. Processing outside Canada
Some of Folded Corner's service providers process or store information outside Canada, including in the United States. Other providers may use distributed infrastructure in multiple countries.
As a result, personal information processed outside Canada may be subject to the laws of the country where it is processed and may be accessible to courts, law-enforcement authorities or other government authorities in accordance with those laws.

6. Browser storage and cookies
Folded Corner uses browser storage to provide essential features and remember your preferences.
We use localStorage, which can remain on your device after you close your browser, and sessionStorage, which normally lasts for a browser tab session.
Browser storage may contain:
- authentication and session information;
- language preferences;
- Shelf layout preferences;
- temporary invitation information;
- list display and filter preferences; and
- temporary password-recovery information.
Authentication storage allows you to remain signed in between visits. Folded Corner does not store your password in this browser storage.
Folded Corner does not currently use cookies for advertising or behavioural tracking.
Some infrastructure providers may use necessary security technologies. For example, Cloudflare may use a security cookie when protecting requests to our backend services. External content providers may also process browser requests according to their own practices.
7. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information.
We may disclose information:
- to service providers that help us operate Folded Corner;
- to other Readers according to the feature being used, your privacy and discoverability settings, and access to shared spaces;
- when you ask us to share information or direct information to another service;
- when reasonably necessary to protect Folded Corner, our Readers or others from fraud, abuse, security threats or unlawful activity; or
- when required or permitted by law.
Personal notes, ratings and reading history are not made public simply because you use a shared list or social feature. Shared comments, activity and other collaborative information may be visible according to the feature and its access rules.
When you use your device's native sharing features, information you choose to share is sent to the service or person you select and is then subject to that service's privacy practices.
8. Data retention and account deletion
We keep personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide Folded Corner, maintain the service, meet legitimate operational or legal requirements, and resolve disputes. Different types of information may be kept for different periods.
When you successfully delete your Folded Corner account, your account and associated personal application data are deleted from our active application systems. This includes personal notes, ratings, reading history, friendships, uploaded files and comments you authored.
If you contributed books to a shared list that remains after your account is deleted, those books may remain on the list with your attribution removed. Replies written by other Readers may also remain where appropriate.
After successful account deletion, Folded Corner removes account-specific browser storage associated with the deleted Reader from the browser used to complete deletion, where browser storage access permits. Session-storage cleanup applies to the tab completing the deletion. Unrelated visitor, device and other Reader preferences may remain.
Support correspondence may remain in our mailbox for as long as reasonably necessary to handle the request and for legitimate administrative, security, or legal purposes.
Service-provider logs and backups may remain under applicable retention arrangements.
9. Your choices and privacy rights
Depending on applicable law, you may have the right to:
- access personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete information;
- ask questions about how your information is collected, used or disclosed;
- withdraw consent where applicable, subject to legal or contractual restrictions and reasonable notice;
- delete your Folded Corner account; and
- raise a concern about our privacy practices.
Many types of information can be viewed or changed directly within Folded Corner.

We may need to verify your identity before completing certain privacy requests.
10. Security
We use reasonable administrative and technical measures intended to protect personal information against unauthorized access, disclosure, loss, misuse, alteration or destruction.
No online service can guarantee absolute security. If we become aware of a privacy or security incident, we will respond in accordance with applicable legal requirements.
11. Age requirement
Folded Corner is intended for people who are 14 years of age or older.
You must be at least 14 years old to create a Folded Corner account. During signup, you must confirm that you meet this requirement.
Folded Corner is not intended for children under 14, and we do not knowingly allow children under 14 to create accounts.
If we learn that an account belongs to a child under 14, we may take appropriate steps to remove the account and associated personal information.
12. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Folded Corner changes or as our privacy practices or legal obligations change.
When we make changes, we will update the date at the top of this policy. If a change materially affects how we collect, use or disclose personal information, we will provide additional notice where appropriate.
Where required by applicable law, we will obtain consent before using or disclosing personal information for a new purpose.
